Also, periodontists perform such cosmetic surgical procedures as treating gum recession and shaping your gum tissue before crown placement or after orthodontic treatment. Periodontists receive extensive specialized training, including three years of additional training beyond dental school, to learn the most recent advances available to diagnose and treat periodontal disease.
